Employment Protection Act passed

This legislation to enhance employment rights was passed by the Labour Government (1974-79) as part its industrial relations policy that involved a social contract with the trade unions. It received Royal Assent on 12 November 1975.

Amongst other aspects, the Employment Protection Act 1975 prohibited dismissal on grounds of pregnancy and granted maternity leave.

This legislation was an important addition to women’s employment rights and protection from workplace discrimination.
