The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) was set up by the Labour Government in 1999 – with equivalent powers to the CRC and EOC – to replace the much weaker National Disability Council that had been created in 1995.

The DRC came into being in 2000 to review the working of the 1995 act and make recommendations for amendment, and with rights of investigation and enforcement.

The Chair of the DRC was Bert Massie (2000-2007).

In 2007 the DRC, CRC and EOC were together replaced with one new Equality and Human Rights Commission.
