As a follow up to the launch of Women’s Activism Behind the Screens: Trade Unions and Gender Inequality in the British Film and Television Industries by Dr Frances C Galt – a discussion event which we were delighted to co-host with the Women’s Film and Television History Network, we are pleased to release our second podcast – Dr Frances C Galt in Conversation with Sarah Boston.
Sarah has been an active trade union member in the British film and television industries from 1967. She played a central role in the establishment of the Association of Cinematograph, Television and Allied Technicians’ Committee on Equality in 1973 and their investigation into workplace gender discrimination, which produced the Patterns of Discrimination Against Women in the Film and Television Industries report (1975). Boston is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and has produced a series of films on the fight for equal pay for the Trades Union Congress (2006). She is the author of Women Workers and the Trade Unions (Lawrence & Wishart, third edition, 2015).
In the podcast, Sarah and Frances have a ranging and fascinating discussion about the role of trade unions in establishing equality – or otherwise – for women in the film and television industries in the 70s and 80s, the challenges women faced during this time, and the activism and initiatives that brought about change.
